$10M Provincial Funding Announcement
Calgary, Alberta -- Mar 2, 2009 --

GENESIS CENTRE OF COMMUNITY WELLNESS

As early as 1994 residents of NE Calgary approached the city of Calgary with a vision to bring together people of all ethnic backgrounds, and at the same time, fulfill the needs for a recreational and leisure centre. Since that time the dream has grown into a complex which provides sport, recreation and leisure services, human services, and an opportunity to promote culture and community development.

The vision became more defined through meetings with potential partners. The communities of Martindale, Saddle Ridge, Taradale and Calgary Soccer joined together to form the NE Centre of Community Society (NECCS). The Society formed a partnership with the YMCA, City of Calgary and the Calgary Public Library. Since 2005 special sponsors came forward to financially support this project. They are the City of Calgary, the Government of Alberta, Government of Canada, the Calgary Foundation, Parks Foundation, Kahanoff Foundation, anonymous donors, and Genesis Land Development Corporation, after whom the Genesis Centre is named.
The ground breaking is scheduled for June of this year, andd there will be a Public Campaign beginning in May. It is NECCS’s goal to raise $2 million for necessary features and programs in the centre. This public campaign will involve the participation of the ethnic communities, businesses, and cultural groups in the northeast. The 24 acre site for the new Genesis Centre is located just west of the Saddletown shopping centre at the north end of Falconridge Blvd. NE. Another 23 acres is reserved for a future high school.
For additional information call the NECCS office at  40..., or view our website at www.neccs.ca.
